Molly Brown Summer House

Built in 1887, Molly Brown House is a home of character with a great history and earned popularity. Margaret Brown was a woman who became best known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown”, after she was one of the most high-profile survivors of the Titanic disaster. Margaret and the family traveled a lot of the time, and so the house was rented out. Visitors may know Margaret Molly” Brown in association with the RMS Titanic, but there was much more to her life than the ill-fated voyage for which she became famous.

Molly Brown helped found the Denver Woman's Club and worked for juvenile courts. Restored the house as close as possible to its original state and collected many of the Brown family's original furnishings from the late 1800s. Molly” Brown - who really only went by Margaret or Maggie, is most famous for surviving the 1912 sinking of the Titanic after the ocean-liner hit an iceberg.

She was subsequently known as The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” although during her lifetime she was referred to as Maggie” not Molly. Each year about fifty thousand people visit the Molly Brown House. When we arrived at the Molly Brown House, we got in line to get our tickets and looked around at some of the souvenirs they had to offer.

When the marriage ended, Molly Brown spent less and less time in Denver and decided to rent out their house to various families for many years until the Great Depression, when she was forced to turn the house into a boarding facility. Molly Brown (1867-1932) was born Margaret Molly” Tobin in Hannibal, MO. Two of her five siblings had gone to Colorado to seek their fortunes in mining.

You probably associate Brown with the Titanic, but that was only a small part of this amazing woman's life. The tour guide said the staff of the museum were torn because they wanted people to know her as Mrs. Visitors can visit the Molly Brown Birthplace and Museum in Hannibal, Missouri.

An activist, suffragist, and philanthropist, Brown's spirit lives on through educational tours, exhibits, and programming inside her restored historic Denver home. In an attempt to understand the legacy of Margaret Brown, I researched different biographies varying in both time period and complexity.
